TINY HOMES TO BE LEGAL WITHOUT BUILDING OR RESOURCE CONSENT BY MID 2025

A recent government announcement is very exciting news for many people considering building a tiny home, granny flat, airbnb, rental flat or similar.

In summary, it is proposed to allow single storey, detached houses of up to 60 m2 to be built in residential and rural zones where there is already a principal residence in place. This will cut out the lengthy and costly consent process. The houses will still have to be built to the New Zealand Building Code and comply with a number of regulations. They will also have to be notified to Council and may be subject to development contributions.

The government proposal is currently open for public consultation until 12 August 2024 here. This means that the details may change, but also that the government is serious about making it happen as soon as possible! We invite all our readers to comment at the link above, as in our opinion the proposal falls short, currently not integrating tiny homes on rented land or tiny homes as a principal residence on an empty piece of land.

Most of our tiny homes already meet or exceed the specifications of the government proposal. Look here which ones do. As with all our homes, you can customize them to meet your (and the government’s) expectations.

Now may be the time for you to talk to us – before the rush sets in next year. Bear in mind that it does take 7-9 months for a bespoke tiny home, and 3-4 months for a standard model to be built for you.

We are currently accepting bookings for spring and summer 2024, for completions in early to mid-2025. If you book in now, you will be ahead of the crowd.
